Nestled among the red hills and desert climate of Utah’s Dixie, lies the Dixie Center at St. George. We have made a long-standing commitment to reduce our environmental impact on our planet by conserving energy and natural resources. Our successful recycling program as well as our new and innovative energy saving strategies have made us a “green community” leader in the Southern Utah area. Environmental Team

The Dixie Center’s active Environmental Team meets semi-monthly to discuss environmental issues for the Center. They assess needs, prepare policies and implement plans to ensure the success of our conservation efforts.

Minimize Waste/Recycling

  • Cardboard boxes are recycled in bins at the back of the building.
  • We reduce waste by using electronic communications and posting materials on the internet.
  • Decorating packets are accessible on-line saving 15,000 sheets of paper per year.
  • Our food services department recycles animal fats in the kitchen area.
  • Biodegradable containers are used in concessions whenever possible.
  • We use china or glass service ware instead of paper and plastic wherever possible.

Dixie Center Recycling

  • Dishes and silverware are provided in break rooms for employees rather than paper plates and foam cups.
  • Dixie Center uses lightweight, durable, multi-use booths and accessories.


  • All lighting fixtures were replaced with CFL or other energy efficient alternative lighting.
  • 90% of all fixtures have electronic ballasts.
  • All external lighting not needed for security purposes turns off at midnight.
  • Dimmer controls have been installed in all meeting rooms.
  • Lights are turned off in unused rooms.

Energy Efficiency

  • Chiller has soft start (VFD)
  • Programmable thermostats have been installed.
  • Chilled water pump has soft start (VFD).
  • HVAC is used only during scheduled events.
  • Timer sequence installed on all pumps PURCHASING.
  • 5,970 square feet of carpet have been replaced with carpet made from recycled materials.
  • Use of paper products that are recycled and biodegradable.
  • Our housekeeping department uses green chemicals and cleaning procedures that eliminate toxins as much as possible.
  • Dixie Center gives preference to products which are environmentally responsible.

Water Conservation

  • Bathrooms set with faucets that turn on and shut off as needed.
  • Paper towels in bathrooms only release paper towels as needed.
  • Grass areas are on a timer for outside watering.

Food Services

  • Purchase of locally grown food when available.
  • Purchase of organically grown food when available.
  • Food Services has switched their chafing cans to environmentally green heat.
  • Kitchen avoids using excess water by thawing all foods in the refrigerator.


  • We are easily accessible by public transportation. Our local Suntran bus stops just in front of the Center, varying its schedule throughout the day for those wishing local transportation within the city limits.
  • We are located within a 15 minute perimeter of hospitals, airport, restaurants, shopping and local entertainment.
  • Four hotels located within an easy walk of the Center.
  • Four eateries are available within a three block radius offering breakfast, lunch and dinner.
